The Society
The primary aim of the Biology Society of South Australia (BSSA) is to develop and maintain contact between people with an interest in field biology and the conservation and management of natural resources in South Australia. Membership includes professional biologists (university staff, public servants, consultants, teachers), past graduates, postgraduates and undergraduate students, as well as interested members of the general public.
The major activity of the BSSA is to provide opportunities for people to assist with various field research programs. Many of these opportunities will be voluntary but some may include paid work. Our intention is to develop a network of people interested in assisting with field activities and so facilitate the provision of people resources to help researchers. Thus, if a postgraduate student needed some assistance in radio-tracking possums or plotting the movements of tagged birds, or staff of a government agency needed someone to help dig and manage pitfall traps in inland South Australia, then they could approach the BSSA for assistance. The society would circulate information to members about these opportunities and individual members would then make a direct approach to the person seeking assistance if they were interested. Requests for assistance are distributed quarterly via a newsletter, with more up-to-date information provided through this web page.
Becoming a member of the Biology Society is an excellent way for people with an incline for adventure to get involved with a variety of field based projects, to establish important contacts for future employment and best of all meet some very interesting and fun people!
